PLAYER ETIQUETTE

We are not here to dictate to you on how you should behave.  All players involved in [info]darkesthour_rpg are 18 years of age and older, and therefore considered by law to be adults. However, we understand and realize that when you get a group of very creative and individualistic thinkers with different personalities there will be conflict and miscommunication. It happens - we're all human and cannot be expected to be infallible (even us mods). Mistakes will occur, conflict will arise. We are not so naive to think that it won't.

That being said, we would like to point out the following for you to read, review and try to abide by in order to keep this game FUN for everyone and avoid any ooc melodrama, which is not fun. The minute it stops being fun, it stops being a game and that is what we are here for - to play, to create and ultimately tell a story.

1.  Try not to assume. Things happen, from computer problems to real life distractions (spouses, children, pets), that can interrupt an ongoing RP and possibly change another player's mood.  So before you assume that another player is acting the way they are because of you, talk to them- quite often it has nothing to do with you at all.

2. Remember what is in-character and what is out-of-character. Just because Draco doesn't like Ron and hexes Ron, it doesn't mean that Draco's player hates or has ill feelings towards Ron's player. Communication is key between players when roleplaying out conflict between characters. If while roleplaying conflict between characters and you need to take a moment to reflect on the situation, tell the other player. Doing so can be the difference between keeping in character or having your character act out in a way that he or she under normal circumstances wouldn't.

As well, keep in mind that what you, as the player, know versus what your character knows are two entirely different things and should remain that way.

3. Get permission when referring to other characters which you don't have control of. Always contact the other character's player if you need to make reference of that person's character in your RP thread.

4. Avoid power playing or godmodding. This happens when a player:

(a) causes another player's character to act or speak in a manner that is not approved by that character's player;
(b) creates spells or magic that alters the wizarding world and how other characters play in it;
(c) tells another player how he or she should play their character;
(d) plays his/her own character as one who knows all, sees all and is all. Keep your character realistic - he or she will not have the answer to everything and will suffer hardship and consequences just like everyone else's character.
(e)definitively describs the outcome of his/her character's actions against another character or interactive object. For example:

* Player A: Character A punches Character B.
* Player B: Character B dodges the attack, grabs Character A and throws him. Character A flies at Character B, who warps behind him and slashes Character A in the back.

Avoid being Player B.

If the Mods discover or are pointed toward any thread in which it appears there has been any of the above, they may:
(a) ask players to revise the thread;
(b) ask that the thread stop until the situation can be resolved; and/or
(c) call a chat of involved players.

Even the most seasoned and experienced of RP'ers can sometimes fall into this style of playing, so do not feel poorly if you do. Good roleplayers are made, not born and the only way we learn is by making mistakes.

5. Constructive critisism is not a personal attack. If something that your character does or says is not believable, it is not a personal attack against you as the player if we bring this to your attention. We are not saying that you're a horrible person and cannot RP to save your life. If you feel that the critisism is personal, say so and it will be discussed - avoid letting it fester and create bad feelings because then it isn't fun for you or us. The reason we address certain situations because it is our responsibility to keep the overall game in mind and that it runs as smooth as possible.

6. If, for whatever reason, you feel that a plot in which your character is involved in isn't working, contact the Mods. Please do not delete any posts or threads that your character has been involved in.

7. The Mods will address any concerns about lack of player/character inactivity in the game. Gentle reminders are ok, however constantly reminding or harassing another player about not finishing their threads will only put that player on the defensive and likely cause them to discontinue playing. If you have a concern about this player, gently discuss it with them and in the most extreme circumstances when that does not resolve the situation, contact the mods.

Conversely, please be courteous to your other players and if a thread is waiting for you to post in and something has been preventing you from posting to it (real life, lack of "muse" that week etc.) inform the other player of the situation.

Again, communication is key.

8. If you have more than one character, ensure that all of your characters are given equal time and attention in game. Remember that playing more than one character is a balancing act, and not everyone is able to handle that much responsibility. Be honest with yourself and with the other players - if you feel that you cannot handle the amount of characters you have in control, please advise the mods before it becomes a significant issue and cause for poor feelings between you and a player. We would rather see a character recast or reassigned to someone who is able to play the character than have the character disappear within a game. Having to give up a character does not mean you’re a poor RP’er.

9. Cliques. Cliques are difficult to avoid, as there will, of course, be players who feel more comfortable with certain players than others. It happens particularly when some characters interact only with a few select other characters. However, keep in mind there are always other ways to interact with other characters and other players. You never know - some friendships become created between the unlikeliest of characters.

To avoid cliques, creating open posts for any character to join will maintain the spontaneity and liveliness of the game.

10. When joining an open thread it is important that you contact the player who started the post before jumping right in, especially if another player has already begun an RP within it.
